Here at Carters Lane we’re a mixed group of people worshipping and taking part in community activities, which all began over 200 years ago inside a pair of cottages not far away in Illey.
In those days Sunday School was the only way for ordinary folk to gain knowledge and an education. Creating a church within the Sunday School cottages was the way the Elders thought was best to serve the wider community, and so it proved. There became a need to expand.
The present Church continues this philosophy of reaching out into our community, and beyond. You don’t need to be a worshipper for the weekday events. If you fancy coming to a service you would be welcomed and we would feel privileged. Equally if all you want to do is come to an occasional community event then you are equally welcome.
You’ll find that being Baptist defines our welcoming and non-conformist outlook to Christianity.

In the Community we encourage folk to help in whichever way they feel.
We support the Black Country Food Bank with donations of food and daily essentials which can provide help for three days for adults and children who desperately need the help, now more than ever.
For our local community we have a monthly Senior Citizens Lunch club, a tea & natter on a Thursday afternoon where old and new friendships are made over a cuppa. There are also gentle exercise classes on a Tuesday afternoon, all are useful to reduce isolation and provide a social interest.
A big success has been Friday Friendship held in the morning for with an average of 48 dropping in to have a cup of coffee and biscuits, and of course a chat. For VJ day 2025 over 60 came. The Thursday Afternoon Thursday Friends has equally been a surprise, with its different group reducing their isolation and enjoying an informal social afternoon- nothing organised but lots of laughter, some quiz’s.
For other outside organisations we raise money through specific events, such as hosting the annual Community Coffee Morning for MacMillans Nursing which in Sep 2025 raised over £1500 making a total since 2006 of over £15,000. A big thank-you to our community who support these events.
Periodically we choose a different project to support, and this year we have chosen to support local Mary Stevens Hospice.
Earlier The 2024 Comic Relief coffee morning was held on Friday 17 March and raised £425. We raised £1835 in donations for Christian Aid 2025 recently in May, and earlier, for Ukraine, a splendid £5000. The recent UN-Disaster Emergency Commiteee appeal we raised £460.
Without our local community all this would not be possible, so a big 2025 thank you to our local Community.
